The Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal

The Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal

A Guide to the United States Department of Defense Award

History and Establishment

The Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal (IRCM) is a United States Department of Defense service award and campaign medal established by Executive Order in 2014.

The Secretary of Defense announced the creation of the IRCM, which aimed to provide distinct recognition to those who served in Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR), a military operation against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Eligibility Requirements

The Army has laid out specific eligibility requirements for the IRCM:

  • Service in Iraq or Syria between June 15, 2014, and December 31, 2021, as part of OIR.
  • Service for at least 30 consecutive days or 60 non-consecutive days.
  • Honorable service with no convictions by general or special court-martial.

Reinstated Award

After being discontinued in 2016, the Pentagon reinstated the IRCM in August 2017 for qualified troops serving in Iraq under the leadership of then-Defense Secretary James Mattis.

Award Criteria

The IRCM is awarded for supporting operations in Iraq or Syria:

  • Bronze Star: For every six months of service.
  • Campaign Stars: For participation in designated campaigns.

The Department of Defense announced in 2023 that service members who are serving or have served in Iraq or Syria as part of OIR will receive the IRCM regardless of service dates.

Service Recognition

The IRCM serves as a token of appreciation and recognition for the efforts and sacrifices made by service members in the fight against ISIS.
